Till the end of March 2017, 5547 students in 293 batches from 22 states participated in the leadership training.

This training has been evolved as a response to the paucity of leaders with character and competence in India. The objective of the training is developing leaders with broad, inclusive and lasting vision, leaders with character and competence, leaders who practice what they preach and leaders who can influence others. The dictum “Light a candle instead of cursing the darkness” is the reason for evolving this training. Some schools have adopted the practice of selecting the members of the School Cabinet only from the students who participated in the seven days Enlightened Leadership Training. It is compulsory for the principal of the school to participate in the training of the first batch of students from a school. Teachers can accompany the students in the subsequent batches. The training course consists of screening of movies with social themes to make the students aware of the situation of the country, input sessions like socio-political analysis, vision formulation, pluralistic spirituality, GK quiz to expand the horizon of general knowledge, personal projects to enhance thinking, reading, writing and speaking skills. An exposure visit to non-formal schools in the slums and to the super market to have firsthand experience of dual India is also part of the training. At the end of the training the participants together with their principal/ teacher animators will formulate an action plan to be implemented in the school during the year. Each student will formulate his/her vision, goals and policies for life. In their personal report presented on the final day they narrate the changes that have taken place in them as a result of the training and the resolutions they have taken as guidelines for their future life.

In an age of internet and other sources of learning the students can learn many things by themselves. Technological advancement has made learning easy for the students. At the same time education does not mean only acquiring knowledge and skills. If education is the holistic development of the students the role of a teacher has to become that of a mentor and facilitator.
